“Google has got to keep trying to be smarter and smarter. So our mission is to organize the world’s information to make the universe more accessible and useful.” -Matt Cutts, Google

Matt Cutts says it best; Google is constantly trying to provide search users with the best possible experience.  While that’s awesome for the users, it also means that businesses have to work a lot harder to make sure that their websites rank high enough in search to be noticed by users.  Search users only want to spend time examining quality content, and Google only wants to give them that quality content they are looking for.  That is why it is so important for you, as a business leader, to stay updated on the latest standards for search engine ranking.  Currently, that standard is a healthy combination of’s microdata markup and high quality content.

So what exactly is this microdata markup?  Well here is the inside scoop…

What is microdata markup?  Microdata markup is essentially the language in the code of your website that gives meaning to the content on your website so that search engines can easily categorize it in search.  If a search engine cannot find the microdata and use it to make sense of your website content, it will move on to the next website and drop your website’s search ranking.

Why do I need microdata markup?   Because Google, Bing, and Yahoo! have standardized microdata markup, they are expecting it to be on the pages of your website; if it’s not, you’re out of luck.  Websites that lack microdata are losing organic search ranking fast and will not be updated and included in the continuous changes that the world of search is experiencing.  As search continues to play a fundamental role in driving traffic to your website, your business cannot afford to be eliminated from the rankings.

“The more markup there is- schema, video, or whatever- the easier it is for search engines to be able to interpret what really matters on a page.”  -Matt Cutts, Google

How do I get started?  Because microdata is a very new, but mandatory tool, you need to find a website design and development team that knows how it works and how to implement it on your website.  Microdata is complex and time consuming to understand, but once implemented on your website, easy to manage.  Pair your company with a qualified website design and development team and you will save your business an immense amount of time and money as you use microdata markup to build a formidable organic search ranking foundation.

Really good article! SEO is easily the most powerful traffic source available, but it’s definately got a strong learning curve and takes some time to develop. I prefer to outsource it 90% of the time, mostly because it’s not my specialty.

Apart from SEO, my main source of free traffic comes from Facebook. For me, it’s a lot quicker to get started since the traffic is pretty much instant. Facebook is the most popular website on the world, so it’s pretty easy to generate a couple thousand targeted visitors using various strategies.

Thanks you for your kind words. We find this to be very true. Companies are quickly realizing it is much more efficient to outsource SEO. However, you should use great caution when determining which person/agency to go with. That steep learning curve you discussed can make it hard for you to determine if they are actually going to help you. Search and String Entity Optimization is the most influential part of your online presence. Incorrect configurations or minor mistakes in server setup, website code and structure, sitemaps, redirects can cost you domain authority, indexed content, page-ranking, reliable traffic and more for years- overnight. Let alone practicing any black-hat methods to manipulate search. Agencies that seem to be too good to be true- often are! They are practicing “BlackHat” tactics that manipulate search enigines. This helps the agency deliver seemingly legit results to the client, who will eventually get caught and suffer consequences. This can include complete removal from the search engine! Now the agency will charge you for what is called Algorithm Recovery. I recommend hiring a Google Partner Agency when you are in the market. This will ensure your online growth is achieved using established positive methods that adhere to Google’s Web Master recommendations and Guidelines. We have been Google Certified for 3 years now.
